Race Safety

Race Number & Timing Tag Instructions

TCM uses a ChronoTrack timing device to score the race. It is a single-use chip that is affixed to the back of your bib. Do not alter or cover your race number or bend the timing tag in any way.

All race numbers must be visible and worn on the FRONT and OUTSIDE of clothing during the entire race—when entering the assigned start corral, on course and through the secure finish. Be prepared to show your race number when asked by an event official. All bandit runners will be removed from the finish area.

Race numbers and timing chips are non-transferable and must be worn only by the participant to whom it is assigned.

Scoring Procedures

Participants must cross all the timing mats to be considered an official finisher.

Under USATF Rules of Competition, overall awards will be based off the official start of the Half Marathon and the point in time you cross the finish line (“gun time”). Chip time, or the net times that record the actual elapsed time from the time you cross the start line to the time you cross the finish line, will be used to determine age group award-winners.

On Course Runner Safety

Full Width One line Orange Maple Leaves .png

Emergency Contact Info

In order to help our medical team assist you, please fill out the emergency contact information on the back of your race bib and online with RaceSafe. RaceSafe is a secure, HIPAA-compliant tool accessed only by the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon medical team in case of emergency.

NOTE: If you do not receive RaceSafe confirmation emails, check your spam folders.

Saturday2025-111.jpg

For Your Safety

Listen to your body. Do not continue running with chest pain, chest pressure, severe shortness of breath, or other symptoms that are not familiar to you. If you are ill on race day or a few days prior to the race, your risk of injury increases and you should consider withdrawing. Your health is most important; there will always be another race.

No dogs, animals of any kind, baby joggers, baby strollers, skate boards, roller blades, unauthorized bicycles or any other unauthorized wheeled device will be permitted on the course. If you have any questions about our ADA accommodation, please contact us at [email protected]. In addition, please remind your cheer team to not cross the course in front of participants.

Marathon_10m_2025-929.jpg

Dropping Out of the Race

If you wish to drop out, but do not need medical assistance, please proceed to a designated drop out zone, located with the medical volunteers at fluid stations from Mile 6 through Mile 10. Runners that are met by the sweep vehicle will be delivered to a drop out zone for a ride to the finish area. Runners that drop out will not receive a finisher’s medal. NOTE: the closest drop out zone may be behind you.

You should know your sweat rate so you can replace enough fluid, but not too much, during your race. Running while dehydrated decreases your performance and increases your risk of collapsing, so you need to ingest fluid along the course. Drinking too much water or sports drink can be fatal, so you should not drink more than you sweat. If you are running at a pace that is slower than four hours, you can probably drink when you feel thirsty and be safe. If it is hotter than expected on race day, slow your pace accordingly.

Full Width One line Orange Maple Leaves .png

Weather Information

In the days leading up to the event, be sure to check your email, visit Twin Cities In Motion, Star Tribune, KARE 11, and tune in to KARE 11 TV for important information regarding expected temperatures or impending inclement weather. Event officials will announce the race conditions (based on Wet Bulb Globe Temperature information) prior to the start to help you gauge your pace and fluid replacement.

TCM uses a color-coded Event Alert System (EAS) to communicate the status of course conditions to participants leading up to and on race day. Familiarize yourself with the flag colors and meanings, on this page, which will be displayed at the start line, and at fluid stations along the course.

Impaired Runner Policy

Medical personnel event officials are permitted to remove from the race any runner deemed medically impaired.

Medical officials will use these criteria to determine whether you should continue. You must be able to:

  • Proceed in a straight path toward the finish line.

  • Say who you are, where you are and what you are doing.

  • Look clinically fit to proceed, with good color and reasonable running posture.

Race Day Cancellation Policy

Twin Cities In Motion’s primary concern is for the safety of the volunteers setting up for the event, participants, spectators and the community at large. TCM will not expose participants or the Twin Cities community to undue risk as a result of staging our event. When weather or other conditions present a danger to the participants or community at large, the event official committee will maintain the right to cancel the race without refunds or race credits. The staging of a race of this magnitude requires substantial expense prior to the race itself.

In the unfortunate case of inclement weather or other dangerous situations, participants can watch for communication by Twin Cities In Motion via the website, text message, through the TCM app, via email, and on Facebook and Instagram

Our Commitment to Sustainability

Sustaining the Most Beautiful Urban Marathon in America®

Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Weekend is blessed with a scenic setting where participants enjoy the lakes, river and vistas of Minneapolis and St. Paul. As race organizers, Twin Cities In Motion strives to make each edition of the event more sustainable than the last. We encourage you to help us lessen our impact on the environment we run through.

How You Can Help:

With Your Carbon Footprint

Consider lowering your race day carbon use by taking public transportation to the Health & Fitness Expo, start line or from the finish area. All Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Weekend participants can ride Metro Transit light rail, blue line and green line, for free on race day by showing bib or proof of registration! For transit information, visit the Metro Transit website

At the Start Line

Drop unwanted warm-up clothes in designated bins located throughout the start area for collection and reuse by our partner, The Salvation Army.

On the Course

Gel packets should be dropped in the designated box. Cups should be dropped into the compost bins. For other non-compostable items, deposit into the trash bin or hand to a volunteer. Please do not throw anything on the ground.

At the Finish Line

Recycle your heat sheets by passing them to a Green Team volunteer upon exiting the finish chute or in the finish festival. Throughout the State Capitol grounds, you’ll find Sustainability Stations with signage to guide which refuse items belong in which waste stream. Please follow the signage and ask a green team volunteer if you have any questions. Sustainability Stations will collect compost, recyclables, and trash.

Course Amenities

Race Pacers Presented by Medtronic

Restrooms

Portable restrooms will be available near the start corrals, points along the course, and in the finish area. See course technical layout and the start line, course and finish line maps for specific restroom locations in those areas.

Marathon_10m_2025-374 (1).jpg

Mile Markers, Splits, and Timing

EEach mile will be marked with flags on one side of the course. Split timing will be at approximate locations of 5k, 10k, and Miles 8.6, and 11.7. All splits will be available to spectators in real-time in the TCM app. You must run across the timing mats on the course to get your official splits, as well as at the start and finish line, or you may be disqualified.

Fluid Stations

Water, Lemon-Lime Nuun Endurance, and toilets are available at all 8 stations along the course. Please note Nuun is in light blue Nuun cups, marked by Nuun flags, served first. Water is served second in Medtronic white and blue cups marked by dark blue flags.

Fluid Station Tips & Tricks
  • There is more than one table for each fluid. If tables are crowded, move to the next one.

  • Make eye contact with the volunteer to help ensure a successful cup handoff.

  • If you choose to take fluid at a fluid station, move to the side of the course and allow runners the center of the road.

  • Pinch the cup to avoid swallowing air or spilling fluid.

  • Do not accept fluids or food items from sources other than official fluid stations.

  • Throw empty cups into a compost/organics bin. Throw gel packets into the designated box(es). Other non-compostable refuse deposit into the trash bin or hand to a volunteer. Please do not throw anything on the ground.

  • Thank the volunteers for providing valuable course support!

  • Look for changing EAS conditions. EAS flags are posted at each fluid station.

Meet the Runtourage!

“A Friendly Face to Share Your Pace”

RUN_logo_white.png

The Runtourage consists of experienced runners who are excited to welcome new runners, slower runners, and walkers. They know what the highs and lows of an event can bring and they are eager to pay it forward by celebrating and encouraging every participant. Many of them identify as slower, back of the pack runners and know how much it means to be cheered until the very end.

2025 Charity Runners_E.png

Thank You Charity Runners!

More than 1,700 runners in this year’s 10 mile, Marathon and TC Half Marathon for More will participate as members of Miles for a Mission Charity Program, dedicating their races to fundraising and awareness-building for an array of local and national causes.

This year, Twin Cities In Motion will welcome more than 70 charity teams to the event, whose charity runners raise nearly $1.5 million annually on Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Weekend. If you’re not a charity runner yourself, we invite you to consider running for a cause in the future. You can make an impact this year, too, by donating to a charity runner to support their efforts.

Reminder: Official Miles for a Mission Charity Runners will also have access to the complimentary Miles for a Mission Hospitality tent in the 27th mile!

Raise the Community Pace

Last year, Twin Cities In Motion launched Raise the Community Pace a four-year initiative seeking to double the organization’s annual charity fundraising impact. Twin Cities In Motion has a goal to help over 100 charity teams raise a total of $2.62 million dollars annually by 2028. Another objective of this ambitious undertaking is to increase the number of marathon weekend participants running for charity to 10% of runners, up from the current 3% level.

The Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Weekend is well-known for the enthusiasm of its 300,000+ annual spectators. This year, the crowds lining the course will be even more encouraging, thanks to the Diane & Alan Page Community Cheer Challenge.

We’ve invited the community—from event sponsors and run stores to nonprofits, community groups and local bands —to become official Diane & Alan Page Community Cheer Challenge cheer zones to help make every aspect of the marathon a community celebration.

Since the Half Marathon course begins to overlap with the Marathon course after about mile 6, Half Marathon participants will get to experience some of these wonderful cheer zones as well! Over 60 cheer zones will be competing among one-another to earn nonprofit donations based on the creativity and enthusiasm of their cheer zone. Half Marathon participants can vote for their favorite cheer zone after finishing the race!

Check back next week for a link to the voting portal! You will also find QR codes at the finish festival that you can scan to vote!

The Cheer Challenge is named in honor of former Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Alan Page—the Minnesota Viking Hall of Famer—and his late wife Diane, who have enthusiastically supported the marathon for decades.

As you proceed through the controlled zone, you will receive:

  • Official finisher medal

  • Heatsheet blanket

  • Bottled Aquafina water and Nuun Recovery

  • Post-race snacks (please be considerate of those finishing behind you and only take one of each item)
