Marathon Weekend Transportation

Plan for traffic. Allow extra time to get around during a busy weekend in the Twin Cities.

Current Road Closures

The ramp from I-35W to 3rd Street, 4th Street and Washington Ave and the ramp from Highway 55 W. to 3rd Street and Washington Ave will be closed 10 p.m. Friday, October 4th until 5:00 a.m. Monday, October 7th.

Those accessing U.S. Bank Stadium from I-35W North will have to take the 5th Ave exit or drive up to 4th Street SE/University Ave and go over the bridge, then head South on I-35W to Washington Ave.

South 3rd Street will be closed between I-35W and US Bank Stadium. The South 11th Ave bridge will also be closed for construction.

Expect Delays

Twin Cities In Motion wants visitors to downtown Saint Paul on Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Weekend to be aware of factors that will increase travel time and vehicle access to the Health & Fitness Expo, located at the Saint Paul RiverCentre, 175 W Kellogg Blvd, St Paul, MN 55102. Participants are strongly advised to use public transportation and plan ahead:

Metal Detectors at the Health & Fitness Expo – New safety and security policies at RiverCentre will require all RiverCentre expo floor visitors to pass through security checkpoints with metal detectors. Please allow for extra time to pick up your race packet and visit expo vendors. Visitors are encouraged to leave non-essential items at home. Click to view details and commonly asked questions.

Concert at Xcel Energy Center Saturday, October 5 at 7 p.m. – Congestion, event parking rates and heavy traffic may begin as early as 4 p.m. in preparation for the concert at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m.

PARK

Various metered street parking is available in addition to pay lots and ramps in downtown Saint Paul.

Avoid event parking increases on Saturday, October 5th thanks to the generosity of the Science Museum on Minnesota. Their Kellogg Avenue ramp will be available to Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Weekend participants for just $10, starting at 3 p.m., when event pricing takes effect across downtown St. Paul. Simply show your Pre-Race email (includes your race number) to the attendant upon entrance. 

Saturday Events

There is not specific transportation to both start and finish lines for Saturday Events, but we do have the following options to make it easier to reach the activities. Jump on the light rail wherever is most convenient for you!

FREE RIDES ON METRO TRANSIT LIGHT RAIL

  • Free rides on Green Line and Blue Line
  • Participants only, must show race bib to board
  • Saturday, October 5 and Sunday, October 6
  • Start/Finish Line Station: Robert St. Station, 10th St. Station, or Capitol/Rice St. Station
  • Visit metrotransit.org for the full Metro Transit schedule

PARK

Various street parking is available in lots, ramps, and neighborhoods surrounding the State Capitol grounds. Be aware of road closures and adhere to 'No Parking' signs. Vehicles violating city regulations will be ticketed and vehicles on the course will be towed.

  • Union Depot offers discounted parking. Park in Lot C for $5 or Lot B for $10 between 6 a.m. and 1 p.m.
    • Board the Light Rail Green Line at the Union Depot Station
  • Parking lot, just west of the State Capitol grounds, offers limited event parking for $20, first-come, first-served.
    • Board the Best Western Plus Capitol Ridge participant bus

WALK

The State Capitol grounds are located approximately one mile from the Saint Paul RiverCentre and downtown Saint Paul.

Sunday

Start Line: 600 Park Ave S Minneapolis, MN 55415

BUSES PARTICIPANT BUSES TO START LINE • Free rides for participants only, must show race bib to board.

  • Buses depart every 10 minutes (5 a.m. - 6:45 a.m.) and will drop off at 6th street near 10th Ave. South near start line.
  • InterContinental Saint Paul Riverfront 11 East Kellogg Blvd. St. Paul 
  • Best Western Plus Capitol Ridge 1-94 & Marion St. St. Paul

If you’re staying in Minneapolis, you may walk or take the light rail to the start line which is near the US Bank Stadium.

PARTICIPANT BUSES FROM FINISH • Free rides for participants only, must show race bib to board.

  • Buses run from 9 a.m. - 2:45 p.m.
  • Buses will be located on Cedar St.
  • Buses depart when full to:
    • InterContinental Saint Paul Riverfront
    • Near US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis
