Race Details
How to relay

Relay consists of TWO runners. The first runner will begin at the start line on the downtown side of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, while the second runner will hop on a bus that will take them to the “transition area”. Both runners will receive a race bib with sequential numbers. Make sure each runner wears their own race bib.


Runner 1: Start time 6:30 a.m. and runs 6.55 Miles to the transition area located on Victory Memorial Parkway

Runner 2: Load bus at 6:20am - 6:50am and be transported to transition area on Victory Memorial Parkway. One first runner arrives, then second runner runs the second half of the race to finish in Minneapolis across the Stone Arch Bridge.

Packet Pick Up

Provide your race number (emailed race week) to pick up your race materials. Race morning packet pick up at the event is available for those unable to attend packet pick up. More information to come!

Paid parking is available at a variety of ramps and lots on either side of the river. Half marathon participants are encouraged to park near their start line on the west side of the Mississippi River.

City of Minneapolis metered spaces are not enforced on Independence Day. Please be aware not all metered spaces in Minneapolis are operated by the City; always read the information posted on the meter to be certain.

Be aware that normal parking rules and fees apply for Minneapolis Parks metered spaces and take note of any hooded meters (no parking). Allow for at least 30 minutes of extra time on race morning; Main Street closes to traffic between 3rd Avenue and 6th Avenue at 5 a.m. and reopens at Noon, West River Parkway closes to traffic between Stone Arch Bridge and Plymouth at 6 a.m. and reopens at 11 a.m. and other streets surrounding the start, finish, and course may be blocked. Please plan your route ahead of time and be respectful of private property.


Friends and family are welcome to come to the race, bring a motivational sign, and watch and cheer on participants! As always, please be respectful of private property and do not enter the race course. Pedestrians are permitted to cross the course at intersections where race officials are present to direct foot traffic.

2019 Course Information for Reference


When should I register?

General registration for the Red, White & Boom! will open on December 5th. Registration closes when field limit is reached or at 6 p.m. on July 3, 2020, whichever comes first.

Registration prices increase as the field fills from $54-$81 per person. Register early for the lowest price!

How can I see if I'm registered?

Use the online registration confirmation tool to verify entry to the 2020 Red, White & Boom!

Can I have more than two people on my relay team?

No, the relay is limited to two persons only. 

Can I switch from the relay to another distance or transfer my entry?

*New this year* There is no switching to another distance, or transfers to other people with a relay entry. Once registered, unfortunately transfers are not offered for relay participants.

Can I receive a refund or defer my entry to next year?

Refunds are available within 48 hours of registration. This policy is valid until 5 days before the event.

With the relay event, both participants will be removed from the registration in order to process a refund. You are unable to cancel just one member of the relay team.

To request a refund, email or call 651-289-7700 within 48 hours of when you submitted your registration. If accepted, you will be refunded your race entry fee; online transaction fees are non-refundable. Deferrals are not permitted.

Can I pick up my friend's packet?

Yes. Please have ready their race number and the correct spelling of the person's name. Registrants will be notified of race numbers in the pre-race email following the end of online registration. Picking up others' packets is limited to FOUR at a time if others are waiting; thanks for understanding. 

Can I pick up my packet on race day?

Yes. If you are unable to pick up your packet before the event, packet pick up will also be available near the start line beginning at 5:30 a.m.

Do I have to run the entire time?

No, you may walk or run at any time during the race. Red, White & Boom! relay participants must, however, be able to maintain the half marathon pace limit average of 16-minute-per-mile throughout the race due to course limits.

Can I run with a stroller?

Strollers are not permitted in the Hot Dash Relay. Strollers are permitted in the Hot Dash 5K. See 5K page for details.

Can I run with my dog/pets?

We love four-legged friends, however, they are not permitted on course. Thanks for understanding.

Can I volunteer for the event?

Yes! We're looking for people available to volunteer at the event on race day. Help us set up the event, serve participants on course, manage logistics, and more. Click here to learn more!
