2019 TCM Internship Program

The Twin Cities In Motion (TCM) Internships serve as part of a high caliber team, which has planned and executed the region’s premier running events since 1982. Our mission is simple - ignite everyone’s inner athlete. 

TCM is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit that organizes 9 races with 27 distances throughout the year, including the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon, to provide opportunities for people of all ages, abilities, and experiences to live an active, healthy lifestyle. Collectively, TCM and its charity partners that fundraise at TCM events give back more than $1.4 million annually to a variety of causes.

We have multiple 2019 internships across a broad spectrum of disciplines including Race Operations, Design and Communications, Social Media and Marketing, Corporate Partnerships, Volunteer and Community Outreach and Registration.  If more than one of these openings aligns with your skills, we encourage you to identify all positions of interest and share that information with us.

Job Descriptions

Volunteer and Community Outreach

The Volunteer & Community Outreach Intern is a part-time position that assists with the planning and execution of TCM’s year-round events. This position will support the areas of volunteer recruitment and management, the Charity Program, Training Team Program, and additional outreach efforts as needed. This position reports to the Volunteer & Community Outreach Manager.

  • Work with staff and appropriate Division Director to identify volunteer needs for all events
  • Manage recruitment efforts to retain nearly 5,000 race-day volunteers for year-round events
  • Oversee recruitment of new volunteer groups, collateral, applications, registration coordination and instructional messaging
  • Develop and manage volunteer loyalty programs (tracking and incentivizing volunteers) and volunteer appreciation programs, including annual awards
  • Manage volunteer registration software platform, including updates and messaging
  • Along with the Volunteer Recruitment Division, oversee race day operations and execution of volunteers
  • Represent TCM at a variety of functions, speaking or staffing a booth on behalf of TCM as an organization

Race Operations  

  • Assist in the planning and execution of certified/sanctioned TCM races as assigned
  • Research vendor options and coordinate equipment orders for events
  • Assist in the permit application process with the city and state agencies
  • Support office staff and race committee volunteers with inventory management and organization of materials and supplies before, during and after events
  • Assist with development of the environmental services plan
  • Support the Race Operations Coordinator with warehouse operations
  • Assist in road closure postings and event notifications to businesses and residents along race routes
  • Provide customer service to participants, sponsors and volunteers
  • Support office staff and volunteers with various office projects and other administrative functions as required
  • Commit to being trained as a knowledgeable and approachable TCM Ambassador at events, in the community and through requested outreach
  • Additional intern responsibilities include:
    • Attending association meetings and event walk through meetings as requested
    • Lead designated area on race day
    • Other duties as assigned

Social Media and Marketing

The Social Media and Marketing Intern is a part-time position that assists with the execution of social media and marketing strategies. This position reports to the Online Engagement Manager.

  • Assist in development and execution of social media strategies
  • Draft, manage and monitor social media campaigns for various audiences using appropriate tone and branding
  • Track and report website and media analytics
  • Draft and edit other writing projects as assigned, including marketing emails, website copy and media projects
  • Help design community and event marketing outreach strategies including booth staffing, materials, logistics and messaging
  • Serve as staff support for Communications and Public Relations Committee projects and attend evening meetings as assigned
  • Support brainstorming and execution of tactics to meet marketing and experience team goals
  • Coordinate special projects and assist in office tasks as directed


The Registration Intern is a part-time position that assists with the planning and execution of TCM year-round events. This position will support the registration platform, volunteer committee management, packet pick-up, customer service and will report to the Registration Coordinator.

  • Assist with sponsors to activate their registration entitlements
  • Assist in creating online registrations and management of the registration data
  • Assist in management of the Corporate Team Challenge program
  • Assist with charity team to activate their registration entitlements
  • Co-manage packet pick up for various events
  • Assist with customer service

January – December 2019

Work Schedule

Monday – Friday office hours
TCM events and other community outreach requests (to be mutually agreed upon)

Hours Per Week

Typically 15 hours per week; increase in hours available for certain event weeks
