Seven of the Team USA Minnesota runners will participate in the Life Time Fitness Torchlight 5K in Minneapolis on July 23. Then on July 26, Heather Kampf will defend her title at the Ryan Shay Mile in Michigan, while Eric Finan and Jon Peterson will compete in the USA 7 Mile Championships at Bix in Iowa.
Running in the Torchlight 5K in downtown Minneapolis will be Heather Kampf, Eric Finan, Jon Peterson, Meghan Peyton, Gabriele Grunewald, Jon Grey and Travis Burkstrand. Over 5,000 will run in the 7:30 p.m. event which is part of the City of Minneapolis’ annual Aquatennial Festival.
The run starts on Hennepin Avenue and 16th Street and finishes at St. Anthony Main along the Mississippi River. The evening running event – which will be followed by a post-race party – is held just prior to the Aquatennial’s Torchlight Parade along the same route.
Ryan Shay Mile – July 26
Two-time defending champion Heather Kampf will compete in the Ryan Shay Mile in Charlevoix, Michigan, on July 26. This is the seventh year of the invitation only mile for women and men. The event begins at 10:30 a.m.
Kampf won the women’s race in 2013 in 4:30 and in 2012 in 4:31.
USA 7 Mile Championships – July 26
Eric Finan and Jon Peterson will be among the competitors at the USA 7 Mile Championships that will be held in conjunction with the Quad-City Times Bix 7 in Davenport, Iowa, on July 26. This is the 40th annual Bix with the race starting at 8 a.m.
Finan has a best in the 10K of 29:37 and Peterson has posted 28:50 in the 10K distance. Both have recently set personal bests during the past two months in the mile, 3000 meters and 5000 meters and have been competing in Europe the first half of July.
Results from European Track Competitions
In the final track competitions during July for the team in Europe, Gabriele Grunewald placed third in the 3000 meters at the Meeting de Atletismo in Madrid on July 19 with a time of 8:52.39, while Heather Kampf ran a personal best of 4:06.16 (previous 4:07.15) in the 1500 meters at the KBC Night of Athletics in Heusden, Belgium.
Also competing at Heusden were Eric Finan who won his heat of the 5000 meters with a personal best time of 13:37.71 (previous 13:41.33) and Jon Peterson who placed eighth in the heat with a time of 13:49.98.
Team USA Minnesota is based in the Twin Cities. Formed in 2001, the purpose of the training center is to improve the competitiveness of post-collegiate American distance running and to develop Olympians. Twin Cities In Motion is a major sponsor of the program.
