Four Team USA Minnesota distance runners – Gabriele Grunewald, Heather Kampf, Eric Finan and Jon Peterson - are now in their final week of European track competitions for the month of July with the last of the track meets for the athletes occurring on July 19.
Grunewald will pace the women’s 5000 meter race at the Spitzen Leichtathletik in Luzern, Switzerland, on the evening of July 15. She will then compete on July 19 in either the women’s 1500m at the KBC Night of Athletics in Heusden, Belgium, or in the women’s 3000m at the Meeting de Atletismo in Madrid, Spain. Grunewald has a best in the 1500 of 4:01.48 and 8:42.64 in the 3000.
Also at the Heusden meet will be Kampf in the women’s 1500m, along with Finan and Peterson who will run in the men’s 5000 meter race. Kampf has posted a best of 4:07.15 in the 1500m. In the 5000m, Finan has a best of 13:41.33 and Peterson a best of 13:39.51 which they set at the USA Outdoor Championships in late June.
Over the weekend, Grunewald won the women’s 1500 meter race in 4:07.70 at the Kortijkse Guldensporenmeeting in Kortrijk, Belgium, on July 12, and Kampf was eighth in the women’s 800 meters with a time of 2:01.15 at Sainsbury’s Glasgow Grand Prix in Scotland, also on the 12th.
At the Letterkenny AC Mile Challenge Event on July 13 in Ireland, Peterson ran a personal best of 4:00.54 in the mile to finish fourth (previous best was 4:01.12) and Finan ran 4:06.92 to finish ninth.
Team USA Minnesota is based in the Twin Cities. Formed in 2001, the purpose of the training center is to improve the competitiveness of post-collegiate American distance running and to develop Olympians. Twin Cities In Motion is a major sponsor of the program.
