Twin Cities in Motion

Staff

The staff at TCM prides itself in its culture. This group thrives on teamwork, respect, and fun (and of course, good food)!

Virginia Brophy Achman- Executive Director

Virginia joined the TCM team in June 2000 as Race Operations Manager, became Race Director in 2003, and Executive Director in 2004. She recently completed term as President of the Board of Directors for Running USA, also serving on the advisory Board of Directors for Team USA Minnesota and Bolder Options. In December 2008, she was elected Chair of Women's Long Distance Running for USATF. As a volunteer, Virginia has been involved with Susan G. Komen Twin Cities for many years, and has served as Chair of Registration for a 46,000 person event for the last 10 years. Virginia is a marathon runner, and has completed ten 26.2 mile races.

Terry Ryan- Director of Operations

For some of us, a love of running comes natural and for others, it has to be learned. Terry is one of the others. As a junior high student, Terry dabbled in other sports, mainly football. He thinks his love for running developed as he was being chased down the football field by guys twice his size, where outrunning his opponents was nearly a matter of life and death. He's continued to run on and off over his adult life, running 12 marathons and countless other road races. He's been a coach for a local running group and a volunteer for a number of road races, including the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon. Terry joined the staff in the summer of 2006.

Jeff Decker- Race Director

Jeff is the race director (and new father!). Before TCM, Jeff worked for New York Road Runners for over six years. He has worked more than 200 events including six New York City Marathons. After mastering the phrase "fughetaboutit" and ordering several thousand portable toilets, Jeff decided to move to Minnesota. You betcha he is excited to be here and dun cha know he's glad to be closer to his home state of Iowa. Go Duhawks!

Breanne Hegg- Marketing & Media Director

Breanne's loves of running and marketing came together in this position, which combines her many years of experience in marketing with her passion for physical fitness. She knew she'd found her home when she was presented with a stack of tech shirts on her first day and was welcomed at the lunch table by several coworkers who had also brought quinoa. Breanne enjoys the balance of diving into spreadsheets, analytics and marketing plans while also exploring the creative execution of TCM's brand. A fiercely proud Minnesotan, Breanne can often be seen running around the Lakes with her husband and two young daughters.

Melissa Bleecker
- Sales Director

A marathoner, gymnast, and triathlete herself, Melissa brings a wealth of expertise to TCM from a variety of nonprofit experiences. Prior to joining the TCM staff in May 2014, she was a Development Officer at the University of Minnesota Foundation. Before then, Melissa was the Director of Corporate Giving & Donor Research at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and Assistant Director of Development for The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. Having grown up in North Pole, Alaska, Melissa loves to camp, hike, and keep busy with a variety of activities including CrossFit, kayaking, cycling, climbing, volunteering and as a freelance violinist. Melissa is a finisher of the 2010 Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon.

Catherine Bishop- Registration Coordinator

Catherine keeps everything in working order with our event registration. You'll often find her working on two computer screens at the same time with her Shih Tzu, Dutchess, lying nearby. Catherine started working for TCM in 1999 before online registration was available and was paid $.25 for each registrant she entered in the database. She did seasonal data entry for 5 years before coming on board in a year-round capacity. Not really a runner before working at TCM, Catherine has worked her way up to being a half marathoner!

Lindsey Altermatt- Administrative Coordinator

Lindsey, the voice of TCM keeps the physical office in motion by keeping up with office supplies, providing administrative support to managers, and providing every day frontline customer service. Lindsey also spends time helping with course operations. Favorite activities include: singing while she works, drinking wine around a bonfire, keeping up with her two dogs and two cats, gardening, biking, and spending time with her husband and daughter!

Sandy Unger- Youth Programs & Community Outreach Manager

Sandy is a recovering New Yorker, having been born and raised there. She settled in Minnesota right out of graduate school and fell in love with the people and the green spaces and only goes back to NY to visit friends and for an adrenaline rush. After spending a "lifetime" working for multiple municipal Park and Recreation Departments, School Districts and non-profits, she found a place with TCM. When not helping kids develop healthy lifestyles by learning to love running, she can be found traveling the world, geocaching, collecting matchbooks, cooking, and providing leadership to local and national non-profits helping to prevent Domestic Violence.

Vanessa Graetz- Online Engagement Manager

Vanessa joined TCM staff in spring of 2012. Originally from Green Bay, Wisconsin, she's been loving her time in Saint Paul, Minnesota with the exception of all the purple and gold. Also known as Webnessa, you can find her maintaining all TCM accounts online, and she can usually be spotted near the finish line on race day. Vanessa spends her free time soaking up the sun, traveling, and instagramming coffee with friends. She loves training for and completing half marathons, although she's got her eye on finishing a full before she turns 25!

Greg Haapala- Participant Services and Events Manager

Greg joined TCM in summer 2012 and hails from the Motor City. Prior to coming to Minnesota, he worked in college athletics at the University of Detroit Mercy, where his main responsibilities were ticket operations, event management, and sometimes donning the mascot costume when students were on break. Greg is excited to bring his love of running and race events to the Twin Cities. His responsibilities with TCM include organizing the Health & Fitness Expo, 27th Mile, and other fun events, as well as working with Charity Partners and Corporate Teams. Outside of work, Greg will likely be found running trails, watching his beloved Detroit/Michigan sports teams, or taste testing local brews.

Kelli Bartholow- Operations & Volunteer Manager

Kelli, a former Twin Cities In Motion intern and volunteer, joins the full-time staff after serving as the Outreach Coordinator at Bolder Options, a local non-profit organization focused on healthy youth development through mentoring, wellness activities, and leadership opportunities. Her responsibilities at Twin Cities In Motion include recruiting and organizing the 6,000 volunteers needed to manage our year-round events. Kelli grew up in Shoreview, MN and graduated from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities with a B.S. in Sport Management. Kelli has a passion for running and loves spending time with her two favorite people in the world: her toddler trotting nieces, Zoë and Cora.

Charlie Mahler- Media and Communications Manager

Charlie joined TCM after wearing many hats in the running industry. A former college coach and the founder of the popular running website Down the Backstretch, Charlie is pleased to work for an organization that has long been important to him. A spectator at the first Twin Cities Marathon in 1982, Charlie won the inaugural Medtronic TC 10 Mile in 1999 and served the organization in various capacities prior to joining the staff. Charlie enjoys running, reading, cycling, and being active in the outdoors.

Colleen O'Connell - Accounting and Program Support Specialist

Number crunching is the name of the game for Colleen! Coming to us from REI, Colleen joined TCM in December 2013. An avid runner, Colleen can often be found around the Saint Paul trails training for one of her marathons or half marathons. When she isn't laced up, she can be found cozied up on the couch with a good show, a good book, and some good wine!

Ed Whetham - Race Operations Manager

Stemming from his experience as store manager for Run and Fun, and serving as the LDR Chair for USATF MN,  Ed played several key volunteer roles within the Twin Cities In Motion organization such as logistics with our youth events, and most recently was the division director for the Red, White & Boom! TC Half Marathon before officially joining the staff in August 2014.  .  When Ed isn’t at his desk filing permits, and procuring myriad race supplies, he can be found schlepping pallets around the warehouse, or out at the race sites taking measurements. Favorite activities include cheering on the Vikings, running and spending time with his four cats!

Sara Caruso- Corporate Relations Manager

Sara was born and raised in the St. Paul area and attended the University of St. Thomas, graduating with a B.A. degree in Marketing Management. She joined the TCM Staff in June of 2014, after running her first marathon at the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon the previous year. Sara began her TCM career as an intern and transitioned into a full-time staff position in January of 2015. Prior to TCM, she worked for her family-owned fence company. When not working, Sara likes to spend her time playing bingo, doing jigsaw puzzles, and running around the lakes.

Kallie McBride- Marketing and Communications Intern

Kallie was adopted from South Korea and raised in Warroad, MN. While she has played hockey her entire life, she was introduced to running very early in life; most likely due to her father being the cross country and boys’ track & field coach.  She recently graduated with a degree in Marketing from the University of Minnesota. When not working, Kallie enjoys reading, hanging out with her friends, and experimenting in the kitchen. While this is her first time working in the office for TCM, Kallie has been part of the TCM Association since 2013 working in the secure finish area for the Medtronic TC 10 Mile and Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon.
