A recovering (brief) collegiate cross-country and track runner, Mike spends most of his time running these days as a competitive amateur soccer player. He joined the TCM team in October 2015 as the organization’s inaugural staff president, charged with evolving the organization’s reach as an active-living events organization. Mike is a board member of the Sanneh Foundation and also serves as an executive committee member of the British American Project. Prior to joining TCM, he was an external affairs executive at Comcast and Target Corporation. Mike spends his free time travelling with his wife, Jen, and chasing his obstinate basset hounds.
Virginia Brophy Achman
Virginia Brophy Achman is executive director of Twin Cities In Motion (TCM), the organizer of the region’s premier running events, including the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon, a Top 10 U.S. Marathon and a year-round calendar of events. She joined TCM in 2000 as Race Operations Manager and served as Race Director before becoming Executive Director in 2004. During her leadership TCM has evolved into a mission-driven organization that promotes healthy lifestyles through running events and community outreach and contributes a portion of every race dollar to local youth and professional athletes, raising more than $1,000,000 annually with its charity partners. Virginia is active in the running industry and served as Chair of Women's Long Distance Running for USA Track & Field (2008-2012) and President of Running USA (2009-2012). Currently Virginia is a 24 year volunteer, serving as Chair of Registration for Race for the Cure--Susan G. Komen Twin Cities. A runner herself, Virginia has completed ten marathons. Virginia’s passion for getting the Twin Cities moving is reflected through the many programs TCM offers including corporate wellness and youth running. Through its year round running events, TCM is able to inspire and support individuals and families efforts to achieve a healthy lifestyle.
For some of us, a love of running comes natural and for others, it has to be learned. Terry is one of the others. As a junior high student, Terry dabbled in other sports, mainly football. He thinks his love for running developed as he was being chased down the football field by guys twice his size, where outrunning his opponents was nearly a matter of life and death. He's continued to run on and off over his adult life, running 12 marathons and countless other road races. He's been a coach for a local running group and a volunteer for a number of road races, including the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon. Terry joined the staff in the summer of 2006.
Elizabeth has been passionate about events since she learned you don’t need to have a birthday to throw a party at the age of five. Since then, all signs have pointed her towards a career combining her love of sports and events. Shortly after receiving a degree in Sports Marketing and Management from Indiana University, Elizabeth found her calling working on the Chicago Marathon and continued to work on the event directly and with event partners for nearly 20 years. Along the way, she worked on dozens of other events and couldn’t wait to get more involved with the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon when she moved to Minneapolis with her husband and two school-aged children in 2014. A dream realized, Elizabeth proudly accepted the role of Race Director for TCM in 2016 and has run with it! When she isn’t planning events, she enjoys running (at a leisurely pace), playing volleyball, cooking, photography and exploring the Twin Cities and the rest of the great state of Minnesota with her family.
Joining Twin Cities In Motion in April 2016 combines Amy’s love of fitness and community with her professional experience in partnerships and event marketing. Amy enjoys building meaningful and lasting relationships between brands, companies and consumers by creating positive and impactful partnerships. With multiple previous positions in corporate sponsorships, special events, partnership marketing and merchandising in the retail and legal industries, Amy is thrilled to continue her career journey at TCM. Volunteer work allows Amy to focus on inspiring and promoting women to achieve their professional goals, hopes and dreams as a founding member of the Ellevate Network Twin Cities Chapter and with Dress for Success. Amy’s other passions include travel, running (when her back allows it), yoga, cooking and entertaining. She can also be found enjoying Lake Harriet in the peaceful morning hours, on weekends supporting the fantastic local chef-driven restaurant scene with her husband Dan and playing referee to their two young and very active sons.
Sandy is a recovering New Yorker, having been born and raised there. She settled in Minnesota right out of graduate school and fell in love with the people and the green spaces and only goes back to NY to visit friends and for an adrenaline rush. After spending a "lifetime" working for multiple municipal park and recreation departments, school districts and non-profits, she found a place with TCM. When not helping kids develop healthy lifestyles by learning to love running, she can be found traveling the world, geocaching, collecting matchbooks, cooking, and providing leadership to local and national non-profits helping to prevent domestic violence.
Charlie joined TCM after wearing many hats in the running industry. A former college coach and founder of the popular running website Down the Backstretch, Charlie is pleased to work for an organization that has long been important to him. A spectator at the first Twin Cities Marathon in 1982, Charlie won the inaugural Medtronic TC 10 Mile in 1999 and served the organization in various capacities prior to joining the staff. Charlie enjoys running, reading, cycling, and being active in the outdoors.
Vanessa joined TCM staff in spring of 2012. Originally from Green Bay, she's now enjoys her time exploring the Twin Cities. Also known as Webnessa, you'll find her maintaining all TCM's online accounts and near the finish line on race day. Vanessa spends her free time soaking up the sun, traveling to visit besties, and posting on Instagram. She enjoys training for and completing half marathons, and became a marathoner thanks to the encouragement from her coworkers. She serves on the Young Professional Board at Cornerstone, a domestic violence prevention and care agency in Minnesota.
Sara was born and raised in the St. Paul area and attended the University of St. Thomas, graduating with a B.A. degree in Marketing Management. She joined the TCM staff in June 2014 after running her first marathon at the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon the previous year. Sara began her TCM career as an intern and transitioned into a full-time staff position in January 2015. Prior to TCM, she worked for her family-owned fence company. When not working, Sara likes to spend her time playing bingo, running around the lakes, and most of all, caring for her adorable son!
Stemming from his experience as store manager for Run and Fun and serving as the LDR Chair for USATF MN, Ed played several key volunteer roles within the Twin Cities In Motion organization such as logistics with our youth events, and most recently division director for the Red, White & Boom! TC Half Marathon before joining the staff in August 2014. When Ed isn’t at his desk filing permits, and procuring myriad race supplies, he can be found schlepping pallets around the warehouse, or out at the race sites taking measurements. His favorite activities include cheering on the Vikings, running and spending time with his four cats.
Kelli, a former Twin Cities In Motion intern and volunteer, joined the full-time staff after serving as the Outreach Coordinator at Bolder Options, a local non-profit focused on healthy youth development through mentoring, wellness activities, and leadership opportunities. Her responsibilities at TCM include recruiting and organizing the 6,000 volunteers needed to manage our year-round events. Kelli grew up in Shoreview, MN, graduated from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities with a B.S. in Sport Management, and now resides in Duluth. Kelli has a passion for running and loves spending time with her two favorite people in the world: her nieces, Zoë and Cora.
Having worked at all types of events across the nation over the past five years, watching participants cross a finish line for the first time is still Kelly’s favorite part of a race. Kelly’s love for endurance sports started basically as soon as she could walk and has only grown since working as a race director and coach. Out of all the races she’s participated in and worked on, the oddest race would have to be the Run to the Dump Quarter Marathon, where you follow a dump truck to the town’s old dump. Kelly joined TCM in 2017 focusing on designing the athlete’s experience through their race day journey. You can find Kelly doodling site maps and drumming up new ideas for delighting participants around race week.
Number crunching is the name of the game for Colleen! Colleen's duties range from managing company budgets to last-minute, emergency snow-clearing on race morning with Lindsey! Colleen joined the team in December 2013, coming to TCM from many years at REI. An avid runner, Colleen can often be found around the Saint Paul trails with her running group training for one of her marathons or half marathons. When she isn't laced up, she can be found cozied up on the couch with a good show, a good book, and some good wine!
Lindsey, the voice of TCM keeps the physical office in motion by keeping up with office supplies, providing administrative support to managers, and providing every day frontline customer service. On race day you can find Lindsey out on the race course! Favorite activities include hiking on the Superior Hiking Trail, canoeing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, and spending time with her husband and daughter!
Catherine keeps everything in working order with our event registration. You'll often find her working with duo, sometimes triple, monitors and her Shih Tzu, Dutchess, lying nearby. Catherine started working for TCM in 1999 before online registration was available and was paid $.25 for each registrant she entered in the database. She did seasonal data entry for five years before coming on board as a staff member. Not really a runner before working at TCM, Catherine has become a five-time half marathoner!
Leah is Lindsey’s right-hand when it comes to any tasks needed to be done in the office, along with being in charge of interactions and orders with our online store. Leah is a lifelong Minneapolite with a strong connection to the community where she and her husband have raised their 3 boys. After spectating her first Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon in 2004, she was inspired to give it a try and has gone on to run 22 marathons. In her “free” time, Leah enjoys teaching group fitness, cycling, running, doing her never ending physical therapy exercises and dreaming of the minimalist lifestyle she hopes to live someday.
Sara is a Minneapolis native and avid runner. She coached several seasons of Girls on the Run and enjoys being part of the local running community. Sara enthusiastically joined the TCM crew in July 2017 as a registration assistant after working many years in the legal field. When not running or working, Sara enjoys time with family and friends, craft beer and reading (not always in that order). She is married and has a teen daughter and an old black lab, all of whom graciously relive her of her domestic duties every Saturday morning for her long run.
Colleen attended the University of Wisconsin - Madison and was president of Running Club @ UW. She was the race director for their two annual events and fell in love with the job. In the summer of 2017, Colleen was thrilled to relocate to Minneapolis and join the TCM race operations team. Chelsea began running as a senior on Central High School’s cross-country team. Never the fastest on the team, her passion grew around the camaraderie that was shared amongst the team and the sense of accomplishment felt after every run. Growing up in a family of runners, for Chelsea, “marathon weekend” seemed like a national holiday and she couldn’t be more excited for an internship that allows her to be a part of bringing those events to life. On her days off, she can be found chasing down PRs on Summit Avenue, catching up on The Bachelorette, or planning her next Disney vacation.
Mark Gilkerson graduated from Northern State University in the spring of 2015 with a degree in Sports Marketing & Administration. Mark started running not long after he started to walk, running all through high school where he was a state runner-up in track. He also ran in college where he received All-Conference Honors. When he isn’t running, Mark enjoys cycling, spending time with his girlfriend and cheering for Minnesota sports teams. Some of his favorite movies include Stars Wars, Back to the Future, Saint Ralph and anything Batman-related.
Mikayla is excited to join the TCM team and have the opportunity to grow with the organization and the running community while finishing her Sports Management degree through the University of Minnesota. Mikayla has never been into running but since joining TCM has pushed herself to new distances. When she is not in the office, she is probably at an ice arena pursuing her first passion in figure skating. Mikayla was a competitive figure skater for 11 years and has now been coaching her own students since 2011. Mikayla also enjoys working out, going to music festivals and concerts, and spending time with her cats, dog, friends and family.
